PRP facial with SkinPen in Winter Garden, FL
A PRP facial combines SkinPen® microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) made from a small sample of your own blood. Microneedling prompts your skin to repair itself, and PRP adds concentrated platelets and growth factors to that process. It may help with texture, tone, fine lines, and acne scars.
How a PRP facial works
A small blood draw, much like a lab test, is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate your platelets. SkinPen creates thousands of tiny micro-channels in the skin, and the PRP is applied to the treated skin. In some cases PRP may also be injected. Because it comes from your own blood, nothing from a donor is used.
Who it's for
- Uneven texture, dullness, and fine lines
- Acne scars
- Early signs of skin laxity
- Patients who prefer a treatment that uses their own blood
What your visit involves
- A skin consultation and review of your medications and history
- Numbing cream, then a small blood draw
- SkinPen microneedling with PRP applied to your skin
- About an hour in total, with most patients doing a series of three or more sessions about four weeks apart
What to expect and safety
Expect redness like a mild sunburn for one to three days, plus tightness, dryness, and light flaking. Bruising, swelling, and pinpoint bleeding can occur. Rare risks include infection, cold sore flares, and changes in skin color. Each SkinPen treatment uses a sterile, single-use needle cartridge. Blood-clotting or platelet disorders, certain medications, and active skin infections can mean waiting or choosing another option, so we screen you first.
Good to know
SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults 22 and older and wrinkles of the neck. Using it with PRP is not part of that clearance. The FDA has cleared kits that prepare PRP for specific uses, such as mixing with bone graft material, so using PRP on skin is off-label. Studies suggest adding PRP to microneedling may improve acne scars more than microneedling alone, but evidence for general skin rejuvenation is limited. Results vary.
PRP Facial (SkinPen with PRP) FAQ
How is a PRP facial different from microneedling alone?
Both use SkinPen. In a PRP facial, concentrated platelets from your own blood are added. In studies of acne scars, adding PRP appeared to help more than microneedling alone, but results vary.
How is PRP different from exosomes or PDGF+?
PRP comes from your own blood. Exosomes and PDGF+ are manufactured products used with SkinPen. They differ in source, evidence, and cost.
Is there downtime?
Usually one to three days of redness, like a mild sunburn, similar to microneedling alone. Daily sunscreen helps protect healing skin.
How many sessions will I need?
Many patients do a series of three or more sessions, about four weeks apart. Scars usually need more sessions than fine lines.
